The mountains are calling at the Canmore Art Guild

“I hope they get the pleasure and enjoyment of photographs. A lot of our group shows include photographs, but this is a show dedicated to photographs. There is a wide range of styles and subject matter.”

CANMORE – The annual photography exhibit at the Canmore Art Guild is highlighting the mountains and beautiful landscapes of the Bow Valley.

Running from Feb. 2 to 26, the exhibit “Our Mountain Home” will also feature the photography of Harry Rowed, one of Canada’s greatest photographers.

“Every year we pick a theme but what we try to do is pick a theme that we know our existing photographer members can contribute to,” said Kevin McCormick, who also has photographs at the exhibit. “It is usually something open-ended and they can interpret any way they see fit. Virtually all our photographers are out photographing mountains in some shape or form.”

McCormick noted Rowed began his career in Regina as a newspaper photographer and moved progressively across the country.

“He took in some world-class events. He was at the 1936 Olympics, he was at the founding meeting of the United Nations.”

Rowed eventually moved to the mountains, where he continued his photography career.

“In his latter years, he worked for the railways,” McCormick said. “He was based in Jasper and Banff, so lots of opportunities to take photographs of the mountains and the people who occupied and enjoyed the mountains.”

The decision to include Rowed was thanks to his son Scott, who lives in Canmore, putting on a webinar at the camera club.

“I knew he would have a lot of photographs relating to the mountains,” McCormick said. “He seemed to be an obvious choice as someone close by.”

Scott attended the opening reception for the exhibit, where he was able to provide background on the images.

“He was able to give a lot of stories surrounding the images that were presented.”

Other members with photographs at the Art Guild this month include Richard Brown, Simon Latulipe, Patrick McCloskey, Leila McDowell, Robert Reed and Stefan Seifert.

For those who attend the exhibit, McCormick hopes they find enjoyment in the landscapes and people captured.

“I hope they get the pleasure and enjoyment of photographs,” McCormick said. “A lot of our group shows include photographs, but this is a show dedicated to photographs. There is a wide range of styles and subject matter.”
