The Canmore Winter Carnival kicks off this week with a long list of events and activities all meant to shake off those mid-winter blues.

Art, music, sports, history and the much-loved and long-lived Trapper’s Ball and Kid ‘n Mutt races begin Jan. 28 and run through to Feb. 6.

The Trapper’s Ball is set for Feb. 5 at Cornerstone Theatre, featuring beard-growing and log-sawing competitions, and the perennial favourites, a re-enactment of The Shooting of Dan McGrew and a re-telling of The Cremation of Sam McGee.

Tickets for the Trapper’s Ball are $30 in advance and $35 at the door. Doors open at 7 p.m. For more information or to purchase tickets, go to www.atthecorner.ca or call 403-609-0004.

The Kid n’ Mutt races will be held on the Pond off Seventh Avenue on Jan. 30 from 2-2:30 p.m. The races are BYOM (bring your own mutt); however, Snowy Owl Sled Dog Tours will have dogs available for muttless kids. Call 403-678-1878 to register or register on race day at the Pond at 1 p.m. Entry is $5 and space is limited. The championship round will be held Sunday, Feb. 6 at 3 p.m.

Other events include Jam Pail Curling, the Cross-Country Rocky Mountain Ski Marathon, a Shane Philip CD release party, Live on 7th Concert Series featuring Little Miss Higgins, a skating party, Cadet Provincial Biathlon Competition and Rummelympics.

For more information and a full list of events go to www.canmore.ca/celebrations or call 403-678-1878.
