Blink and you’ll miss Exit 98 on Highway One. But do yourself a favour and take the turn off and treat yourself to breakfast, lunch or dinner at the brand new One98Eight in the picturesque hamlet of Deadman’s Flats.

Chef Anand Kelkar is a Bow Valley fixture having served many years at the Fairmont Banff Springs and the Market Bistro at the Three Sisters Resort. When the opportunity to open his own restaurant presented itself this year, he jumped at the chance to make a childhood dream come true and bring a fresh and interesting take on fusion to the Bow Valley in June 2021.

His modern, sleek dining room offers a simple, black-and-white backdrop that allows his colourful food to shine while also framing the gorgeous views. Everything here is made from scratch from the fresh smoothies and to the delicious cumin ketchup that will soon be available for sale at the restaurant and beyond. The menu offers the classics while taking the more adventurous diner on a journey from the Caribbean with the jerk chicken wrap to the streets of his hometown with his Mumbai sandwich. This vegetarian sandwich packs soft, spiced potato between two slices of sourdough with crisp, fresh cucumber, crunchy red onion, tomato, beets and cheese. Pressed panini style, the sandwich is then slathered with a delicious coriander chutney that brings a pop of colour and a world of flavour to the dish.

For breakfast, try the hearty pulled short rib benny, which piles a mountain of rich short rib over a thick slab of brioche topped with two poached eggs made to order and a lemony hollandaise sauce that, together with a tangy blue cheese brings a wonderful balance to the rich flavours. Accompanied by a delicious heap of duck-fat potato hash, this bountiful brunch benny will keep you well fuelled for your mountain adventures.

Finally, if you’re up for a bit of adventure, try the Mumbai toat - a savoury take on French toast that combines brioche bread (made at Calgary’s Italian Bakery) with eggs, cilantro, green chili, tomato the signature One98Eight spice blend and a one-of-a-kind tamarind creme fraiche that brings a cool and creamy element  to all of the spicy goodness of the dish.

Stop in at One98Eight Friday through Wednesday, 7 a.m. until 8 p.m.
