Canmore football players take skills to Texas

Don’t mess with the Canmore boys in Texas.

SAN ANTONIO, Texas – Don’t mess with the Canmore boys in Texas.

Running back Kai Perron and wide receiver Bryton Kapitza travelled to the Lone Star state to play at the International Border War, a multi-nation youth football tournament in San Antonio, Texas, from Feb. 24-26.

The duo was part of University of Alberta Golden Bears U18 Selects, a top squad of handpicked athletes, playing against teams from the U.S., Saskatchewan and Alberta.

Over four games, the Golden Bears squad punched in seven touchdowns, three of which were from the Canmore duo.

“I never really felt like the underdogs really, but the teams we played were pretty practiced and well put together,” said Perron, 17, who ran in one touchdown in the tourney.

A standout on the Canmore Wolverines high school football team, Perron said playing against the skilled teams was an enlightening experience in the football crazy country.

The U18 selects top game was against the Virginia Bulldogs, where Kapitza went on a tear and caught back-to-back touchdown passes to help lift the team in a 17-8 comeback victory and pick up the team’s first win of the tournament.

“It was kind of a whole different thing,” said Kapitza, 17. “The way games were played, how fast the games went, everything was just kind of more intense and a lot different.”

International Border War is for teams from Canada, the United States, and Mexico. While in Texas, the teams played American football rules – such as having four downs instead of three.
