Canmore RCMP seized 14 pounds of marijuana after stopping a driver for speeding on the Trans-Canada Highway near the Banff Park gate, Monday (Jan. 7) at about 11:30 p.m.
After a brief conversation, police detained the driver (the lone occupant) of a Dodge pickup for an investigation under the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act.
A quick search of the vehicle resulted in police locating a small amount of cannabis resin by the driver's seat and front console. Police then placed the driver under arrest and a subsequent search turned up 14 pounds of marijuana in the back of the pickup. Street value of the drugs is about $63,500.
A 38-year-old Calgary man has been charged with possession of a substance for the purpose of trafficking under the act and proceeds of crime under five thousand dollars under the Criminal Code.
The accused will appear in Canmore Provincial Court on these charges later this month.
