LAKE LOUISE – A Calgary man is facing multiple charges following the death of a pedestrian near Lake Louise on Thursday morning.

Police said an Ontario couple had parked their car at a rest station to the east of Lake Louise at about 9:15 a.m. and were taking photographs when a pickup truck heading west on the Trans-Canada Highway struck them on the shoulder of the highway.

The 39-year-old Ontario man received severe injuries and attempts to resuscitate him on the scene were unsuccessful, the RCMP said.

The woman was transported to an area hospital with serious injuries, RCMP Cpl. Susan Richter said.

The RCMP said their investigation found the truck did not stop and the driver was later arrested at about 11 a.m. Thursday (Aug. 5) by the Golden RCMP in British Columbia.

He’s charged with dangerous driving causing death, dangerous driving causing bodily harm, failing to stop after an accident that resulted in a death and failing to stop after an accident causing bodily harm

Lake Louise Fire-Rescue, STARS and the Lake Louise and Banff RCMP were called to the scene for the motor vehicle collision. The RCMP’s criminal collision investigation team also assisted with the investigation.

STARS was originally called to the scene, but were stood when they were no longer medically required, a STARS spokesperson said.

The west side of the highway was down to one lane for several hours while the police conducted their investigation.

Richter said the judicial process to return the 45-year-old man to Alberta from B.C. is underway. Once completed in the coming days, he’ll remain in custody at an area RCMP detachment.
