EDITORIAL: The news of Canmore General Hospital having to shutter its operating room on weekends because of a staffing shortage is the latest wrench tossed at the region’s and province’s beleaguered healthcare system.

A rockfall hazard is delaying the reopening of a popular trailhead in Kananaskis Country closed for several months to support construction activities.

“We have about 9,000 residents [in Banff], who, in conjunction with our local businesses, pay the cost of those four million visitors flushing toilets and using wastewater treatment,” said Banff Mayor Corrie DiManno. “They pay for the thousands of hours of garbage collection and recycling sorting needed for the roads and sidewalks that support up to 40,000 people a day in the summertime.”

Drivers are urged to take a different route; however the eastbound lane of the Trans-Canada Highway remains open.

“We must remember that we are only about half way through the snow accumulation season and can expect a couple hundred more millimetres of snowfall before melt.”

“Development continues at a quick pace in the valley. We don’t want to lose those places and buildings that tell important stories and ground our community.”

“Our climate is changing and if we are not ahead of it, then we are behind it. We need to make sure we are planning for the future and we have provisions in place to help reduce our impact on climate change and then to consider how different our climate might be in the Bow Valley.”
