5 Awe-Inspiring Things to Do in the Bow Valley this Fall

The Bow Valley is an enchanting place throughout the entire year. Autumn is certainly no exception. While some may consider the fall a shoulder season, it’s actually one of the most stunning times of the year.

Tragically, it’s often short-lived. But, its fleeting nature makes it all the more beautiful and even more essential to get out there and enjoy it while you can. So, if you’re looking for bucket-list things to do in the Bow Valley this fall, look no further.

Surround Yourself With Golden Larches

You haven’t experienced fall in the Bow Valley until you’ve lost yourself in golden larch trees. Larch trees are absolutely spectacular in the fall, and tons of gorgeous hikes offer amazing views of the golden beauties. If you’re willing to go on a hike to get the best possible views, some options include Pocaterra Ridge, Chester Lake, Larch Valley & Sentinel Pass, Healy Pass, Burstall Pass, and so many more. As we said, autumn comes and goes quickly around here, so be sure to get out there while you can.

Pick the Perfect Pumpkin

It’s time to get into the fall spirit, and nothing says autumn like a pumpkin patch. Luckily for us, Calgary and the surrounding area have a ton of pumpkin patches for you to go and pick the perfect pumpkin for your jack-o-lantern this year. Even if you don’t want to take home a pumpkin for yourself, it’s an excellent date idea, outing with friends, or photo opportunity with the perfect fall outfit. If you’re unsure which place to choose, we suggest Calgary Farmyard, Cobb’s Adventure Park, Butterfield Acres, or Granary Road. And that’s just to name a few!

Bike the Legacy Trail

The Legacy Trail is a truly stunning bike trail that connects Canmore and Banff. The paved pathway and relatively flat terrain make it an easy enough ride for families and people of varying abilities, but it is a bit of a distance. At over 26 km one-way, this ride doesn’t take some time commitment, but it’s totally worth it. You get beautiful mountain views for the entire ride, and it’s the perfect way to spend a morning or afternoon in the Rockies. You always have the option of biking one way and returning by transit, but if you’re up for the there-and-back ride, it’s great exercise and a ton of fresh air. Autumn is the perfect time of year for this ride because the temperature is ideal, and it tends to be a little less busy. If you love the views but not the effort, consider renting e-bikes for your journey.

Visit Lake Louise Before it Freezes

Lake Louise is just as magical in the fall but tends to be a little bit less busy. If you’ve been dying to get to the iconic turquoise lake all summer, but haven’t felt like braving the crowds, now’s your chance! It’s the perfect time right before the lake freezes. To boot, you’ll bask in the wonder of the wildly blue waters while vibrant fall colours surround it.

Find the Perfect Sunrise Spot

Another one of the greatest blessings of fall in the Bow Valley is that sunrise is starting to happen at a reasonable time. On top of that, it’s not bone-chilling cold outside yet. So, autumn is the ideal sunrise spotting season because you don’t have to get up at an unorthodox time, and you don’t have to brave the cold. There are many remarkable places to catch the sunrise, from lakeside to mountain top, so you won’t have any problem finding somewhere that will take your breath away.
