Pat Treit said she and her fellow cribbage players couldn't help but have a good laugh when she laid down the rarest hand one can have in the game at a friend's house March 21.
"I didn't realize what I had at first, but I knew it was a good hand," Treit said.
"I laid it down and one of the players said, 'Oh my god, is that a 29?' And then we counted it and yeah, sure enough, it was rather a surprise."
The odds of being dealt the illusive hand worth 29 points are one in 216,580 as it requires a very specific arrangement of cards.
The cut card must be a five of any suit and the player's hand must contain the other three fives in the deck and the Jack of the same suit as the cut card.
Treit, a member of the Seniors on the Bow Centre, and her crib partner Bev Giles, won the game against friends Paul and Claudette West.
Treit plays crib at Seniors on the Bow every Tuesday afternoon and also enjoys playing at the Legion, though they are not currently hosting games there.
"I love the camaraderie of the game," she said. "It's a game where you can visit while you're playing, and I've been playing it most of my life."
Despite her luck, Treit did not go out and buy a lottery ticket afterwards, though she laughed at the suggestion and said maybe she should have.
