CANMORE – Knock Knock. Who’s there? Grizzly Paw Comedy at artsPlace. Grizzly Paw Comedy at artsPlace featuring who? Grizzly Paw Comedy at artsPlace featuring Dave Nystrom that’s who.

Unfunny intros aside, the latest comic to take the stage for Grizzly Paw Comedy night at artsPlace on Sept. 14 is Canadian comic Dave Nystrom.

Nystrom, who has won a Canadian Comedy award and a Writer’s Guild of Canada Award for his work on This Hour has 22 Minutes, is a veteran comic who has played with some of the biggest names in the business, including Dane Cook, Bob Saget, Patton Oswalt and the late Robin Williams.

“He’s very versatile, with really good stage presence, and a funny guy,” said host for the evening Scott Dumas. “Dave’s great, I’ve known Dave since I started comedy 18 years ago.”

Nystrom’s material features stories of life as a father of four boys and the show at artsPlace has the benefit of being an uncensored show. That means audiences should be prepared to be to see a raw, gut splitting rendition of Nystrom’s material without fear of the comic holding anything back.

“That’s what I think makes the comedy at artsPlace a little more real, it has a little more bite to it. Dave can bring his club show to that,” said Dumas.

According to Dumas, the intimate atmosphere of artsPlace allows an audience to really connect with a comic. Rather than competing with TV screens at a bar, a comic who plays artsPlace knows their audience is there to watch comedy.

Dumas, who started the comedy shows three years ago with support from artsPlace and Yuk Yuk’s, has programming planned through until May next year, with shows running on a monthly basis. He’s extra excited to see this particular show, however, as he and Nystrom are old friends who haven’t seen each other in a while.

Opening for Nystrom is comedian Sam Walker, a Calgary-based comic who is described as “a comedian that has to be experienced to be believed.”

Tickets for the show are $14.50 for members of artsPlace and $17 dollars for non-members. The show starts at 7:30 p.m. and runs until 10.
