Elevation Place pool delayed
The opening date for the newly-constructed pool within Elevation Place has been pushed back roughly eight weeks after the Town of Canmore was informed last week a problem has caused contractors to delay tiling the pool.
The Town’s communication co-ordinator, Sally Caudill, pointed out that the delay stems from construction issues within the pool area and contractors are working to uncover the specifics of the problem.
“It’s a level of detail that doesn’t happen in the design drawings,” Caudill said. “It’s something that couldn’t have been anticipated until now.”
Despite the delay, the co-ordinator said the Town will not be held accountable for any extra costs incurred and the budget is still on target at this time, however, the decision as to when the facility will be open to the public is still being debated.
The Town is working alongside Mistaya Construction Ltd. and Graham Construction and examining the possibility of opening the facility without the use of the pool.
“It’s really only affecting the tiling of the pool,” she said. “We are trying to figure out if we can still move the library and art gallery in and get the climbing wall up and running.”
Aside from ensuring there are sufficient fire exits and other parts of the building are up to code, Caudill indicated the Town might be hesitant to open only half the facility as it may affect membership and create a risk or liability with insurance issues.
“We’re looking at all those different issues and trying to understand the implications,” she said. There are still some questions remaining, so that’s not finalized yet.”
Regardless of the decision to open parts of the facility before the pool is complete, the grand opening that was scheduled for Feb. 2 will be held at a later date.
“We’d rather have things happen now and deal with them before we get in this facility,” she added. “We’re grateful that the issue has been noted and is being addressed.”
Caudill also indicated the Town will keep the pool at the Canmore Recreation Centre open until the Elevation Place pool is fully up and running.
“On behalf of the Town, I want to thank Canmore residents for their continued support and patience as we work together to open this new community facility.”
