Legacy Trail ends with dangerous transition

Aug 09, 2012 06:00 am

Dear Editor,

On Aug. 3 at 3:15 p.m. I was driving from Banff to Canmore and had just passed the Park gates. I was driving cautiously because there were cyclists ahead of me on the shoulder and sometimes people do strange things.

I could never have predicted, however, that a silver-haired gentleman would politely signal a left turn and ride his bicycle directly in front of me.

I hit my brakes in a panic, saw in my rear-view mirror that a semi-trailer was bearing down fast behind me with its horn blaring, and was aware of vehicles beside me squealing tires as they tried to avoid collision.

I am glad the man on the bike made it safely across the three lanes of the Trans-Canada Highway, and I hope he never endangers and terrifies that many people ever again.

I’m writing this letter to alert others (drivers and cyclists) and to ask if there should be a safer transition point for the (wonderful/well-used) Legacy Trail.

Mandi Kujawa,

Banff

It's not only the cyclists.Biking on the Legacy Trail Sat Aug 11 11:10AM. As we came back to park gates and two big Brewster tour buses were parked at the edge of the shoulder at the transition from the trail onto the shoulder of eastbound TCH. They effectively created a very dangerous situation leaving bikers only the width of the shoulder to ride on with three lanes of eastbound vehicles flying by. Because of the last buses' position, coming off the trail you had to ride at right angles up onto the shoulder. We had cars honking at us as I'm sure they thought we were about to ride onto the hwy. The two buses left only the width of the shoulder to ride on and at the time, there was lots of two way bike traffic. I went over to the drivers and told them they were in a bad spot and were creating a hazard but the buses didn't move. They had box lunches out for guests who were no where to be seen. Brewster what were you thinking????????
Very scary.
