Students travel to Honduras to build homes
A group of 14 dedicated and willing students signed up early in the school year for an experience of a lifetime; to travel to Honduras and lend a helping hand in building shelter for those without one.
The year passed quickly and the trip was closer on the horizon each week. With a few fundraising events and many meetings, we were constantly reminded of our excitement.
The date of our departure, March 26, finally came and we flew to Houston, Texas to spend the night before reaching our final destination of Santa Rosa de Copan. We met our guide and host, Luis, and were off to a great start.
After two days of orientation and sightseeing, we began work on the adobe houses early on a Monday morning. The work was tough and exhausting (but not for Adam and Jon), especially under the Honduran sun. The work on the site included: moving and making adobe bricks, digging trenches, carrying cement, collecting pine needles for the bricks, and mixing the cement.
After each day, we either went back to hotel or went out and did an activity, such as visiting a girl’s orphanage, visiting an elementary school (both of which we are having a fundraiser for), learning how to roll cigars, visiting a coffee factory and visiting a hot spring.
We shared many great experiences while travelling through the amazing country of Honduras. The girls’ orphanage was arguably the best experience we had on this trip. Their bright outlook on life despite their situation really spoke to us. Another meaningful experience was visiting the elementary school and seeing how appreciative the students and community were of our efforts.
All in all, the trip was one of the most memorable experiences in all our lives. We are all glad we could share in this experience and give a little back to our world. We will never forget the experiences we had and the people we met.
